Hockey Academy Update - September 2020

Important Reminder as we enter into Winnipeg Winter!!!

Bus cancellation = No hockey class

Just a reminder that IF buses are cancelled due to inclement weather (snow, windchill, etc) hockey class will be cancelled.  Because SJAHA classes are at the MTS Iceplex, all students are bused, thus if buses are cancelled, on-ice sessions will be cancelled. All students would be asked to report to their school office during the scheduled hockey class time if they are able to safely make it to school.

HCSA Summer Seminar 2019 in WINNIPEG!

From July 3rd to July 5th, the Hockey Canada Skills Academy summer seminar took place in Winnipeg, and more specifically the Bell MTS Iceplex. 14 SJAHA and WJHA staff participated with over 100 other delegates from across the country. On Wednesday night delegates came together for a tour of the Iceplex, a Hockey Yoga session and some team building at Activate! The night concluded with our 1st keynote speaker Olympic Champion Melody Davidson.  On Thursday, we spent the whole day in the classroom and on the ice with Riley Dudar (Small Area Skills), Bob Caldwell (Defence Skills), Nutrition stations with Jorie Janzen and some Floorball with Pier Alexander Poulin. At night all 100+ delegates toured the Human Rights Museum, which was followed by dinner in the contemplation garden with our 2nd keynote speaker Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice. Finally, on Friday we spent the day again in the classroom and on the ice with World Champion Jenelle Kohanchuk (Shooting Skills), Focus Fitness and Winnipeg Jets AJ Zeglen (Athletic Success), and The Rink training centers Jon Cara (Skating Skills).  What a great seminar! All presenters were from Manitoba, which is something that makes us so proud. They were awesome! We were so happy to host, and we are so excited to use all of the great knowledge we learned with our students next year!!!

Jamboree 2017 - George Waters/Hedges

Jamboree 2017 Form: CLICK HERE

The Hockey Academy Jamboree will be taking place on the morning of Thursday, June 22, 2017 at MTS Iceplex, from approximately 8am – 1pm. It is the only time during the year that we split the middle school groups (grades 6-8) from George Waters and Hedges up into different teams and play in a mini-tournament. After the games are completed we will meet upstairs for a free lunch provided to us by the restaurant at MTS Iceplex.
We provide a bus ride from school (8am pick up at school), as well as a ride back to school (approximately 1pm). Because this is during school hours, as well as it may be something a student does not want to partake in, please fill in the form by Friday, June 16, 2017, so we can formulate bussing arrangements and food orders.

Floorball Month Begins Feb 27th

February 27th is the first day for SJAHA students to take a break from the ice and jump into the gym to play Floorball.

Floorball is a sport endorsed by Hockey Canada as an off ice activity that helps hockey players as it has many transferable skills to Hockey.  Most notably, stick skills like shooting, passing and stickhandling (dribbling).  Students require gym clothes and running shoes for this activity.

John Taylor, Westwood, Sturgeon Heights, St James and George Waters will always be at the Manitoba School for the Deaf (242 Stradford st) for their Floorball classes.  Hedges will split between MSD and Camp Manitou gymnasium (850 Green Oaks Ln, Headingley MB).  Hedges students/parents see below for your Floorball schedule:

SJAHA Staff in Calgary with Hockey Canada
Every year, the SJAHA staff travel to Calgary and participate in the Hockey Canada Skills Academy yearly seminar.  This year we learned from Marc Power skating coach for the Ottawa Senators, Hockey Canada Vice President Paul Carson, Goaltending coach Brad Kirkwood and Manitoba's own Bob Caldwell who presented on Developing Defencemen.  Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks Willie Desjardins was the keynote speaker in the Hall of Champions and he spoke about leadership and what he looks for in his players.

Having the SJAHA connected with Hockey Canada provides the staff and the program with many great opportunities and most importantly these events, in turn strongly impact the students in our program.

SJAHA-WJHA-GWMS Students at Moose Game
9 Students from George Waters Middle School were given tickets to go to the Manitoba Moose game on New Year's Eve!  The Moose won 4-3.  Students were given the opportunity to meet Winnipeg Jets 1st Round pick Josh Morrissey after the game!  Wow, what an opportunity.  Josh signed a puck for all of the students and Josh answered questions like "do you get nervous before games - and - what would you being doing if you were not playing hockey?  Josh was also asked about how he did in school.  Josh talked about how he was awarded the WHL Scholastic Player of the year last year.  He talked about how it wasn't easy to get a 96% average while being on the road playing hockey, but I really worked hard to get it, it didn't come naturally.  As he said "nobody can take your marks away from you, work hard and be proud of what you accomplished".  Thank you to the WJHA for this opportunity to watch a great hockey game, as well as a chance to meet a great person and a great hockey player in our community!

WJHA Student of the Month - Isaac L (GWMS)
Click here to see the post from the Winnipeg Jets: https://www.facebook.com/WJTNF/?fref=nf
Here is the write up for Isaac:
We have some awesome kids in our Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy!
This month’s WJHA Player of the Month is Isaac L. From George Waters Middle School. Isaac has been in the WJHA/SJAHA for 4 years now and recently received the George Waters Middle school "Shark award". To be awarded the “Shark Award” at George Waters the student must get Involved in school activities, stand up for others, be a philanthropist and most of all, make someone’s day better. Isaac has been heavily involved in making his academics stronger on a daily basis and has improved his hockey skills during his hockey academy ice sessions. He stood up for his friends who were getting picked on, saying things like “that stuff doesn't happen at this school, you need to stop doing that”. Also, at the Terry Fox Run he gave his popcorn to another student because he was hungry. The staff at GW said they see Isaac happy, smiling, asking how their day is going or thanking them for that lesson today, because it was awesome.

Congrats Isaac being this month’s WJHA Player of the Month.
